NCD calls for peaceful Christmas in the city
Residents of Port Moresby are being encouraged to celebrate Christmas in a peaceful and meaningful way, with a focus on reflection, hope and togetherness.
National Capital District City Manager Ravu Frank said Christmas is a time to promote peace and harmony in the city, and to reflect on shared values such as understanding, reconciliation and unity.
He encouraged people to celebrate responsibly and to use the festive season to build bridges of understanding, especially at a time when divisions can easily arise.
To support peaceful celebrations, the National Capital District Commission has announced a temporary liquor ban in Port Moresby.
The ban starts today and runs through to tomorrow, Thursday, December 26. Mr Frank said liquor sales will resume on Saturday, December 27, and remain open until Wednesday, December 31.
He said the staggered ban is aimed at reducing alcohol-related incidents during the Christmas period. Liquor outlets, including bars, clubs, and retail liquor stores, have been reminded to strictly comply with the ban, with enforcement supported by police and other relevant authorities.
Mr Frank has also reminded liquor licence holders in the city that all current licences will expire on December 30, 2025.
He said the reminder is to help businesses renew their licences on time. The NCDC Regulatory Services Customer Service Team and Licence Division will be available to receive and process renewal applications, while businesses operating without a valid licence have been urged to apply immediately to avoid penalties under the law.
