Parkop calls for peaceful festive season as police launch operations
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has called on police and the public to work together to ensure a peaceful Christmas and New Year, as festive season operations were officially launched at Unnagi Oval this morning.
Speaking at the event, Governor Parkop thanked the leadership and members of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary serving in Port Moresby and Central Province for their dedication and service throughout 2025.
"The year was historic as we markes Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary, and I thank the police for your tireless role in maintaining security during major public events."
"I acknowledge your efforts in supporting the successful Independence celebrations, including large public gatherings and international performances hosted in the city throughout the year, despite challenging conditions."
As the country enters the festive period, he reminded the public that Christmas is an important Christian celebration centred on peace, unity and respect for one another.
He said that while many people celebrate responsibly, a small number engage in unacceptable behaviour, and called on police to ensure law and order is maintained.
"I am confidence in police leadership in NCD and Central Province that they will rise to the challenge and ensure celebrations remain safe and joyful citywide."
Governor Parkop also highlighted the importance of peace and security for national development, saying it is fundamental to improving livelihoods, business and overall quality of life.
He urged police to carry this responsibility through Christmas, the New Year and beyond into 2026.
