United States to fulfill PNG government request

The United States Government will help support Papua New Guinea’s fuel security agenda with the funding and construction of a large-scale fuel storage facility near the Port Moresby Harbor.

In a media statement, the U-S Embassy stated that through the US Department of Defense, a contract worth approximately K1.6 billion (US$ 400 million) had been awarded for the construction of the fuel storage facility.

US Ambassador to PNG Ann Marie Yastishock said; “this investment reflects the importance we place in our bilateral relationship, and the results of continued discussion and collaboration.”

When completed, the large-scale fuel storage facility near the Port Moresby Harbor will store more than
1.6 million barrels or 264 million liters of fuel.

The US Embassy statement reads that; this investment comes at the request of the Government of PNG
and the project will support fuel storage needs and has the potential to increase the diversity of fuel
available for the PNG market.

Throughout the construction process, the US Embassy is committed to maintaining careful and transparent communication with the Government of PNG on its progress.

This award comes in the year leading up to PNG’s 50th Anniversary of Independence and the 50th
Anniversary of US and PNG formal diplomatic relations.

The statement further states that the Defense Cooperation Agreement, signed and entered into force in
2023, forms the foundational framework of both nations’ security cooperation.
