Somare Institute of Leadership and Governance [SILAG] Chief Executive Michael Barobe, speaking at the institute's 71st graduation ceremony in Port Moresby on Friday, said a government plan must be financially supported, following the announcement of SILAG's transition into a university in 2027.

SILAG plans to become a university, specifically a public service university, by 2027.

This comes under the government's medium-term development plan, focusing on sustainable and systematic public sector training in the country.

However, CEO Barobe says this is a challenge for the government of the day.

Barobe emphasized that having an appropriate budget will ensure the aspiration comes into reality.

The planned university will primarily offer degree programs in governance, designed to prepare public servants for their roles.

Leadership is about delivering results

Government Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleo who was an official guest at the graduation ceremony emphasized to the graduands that leadership is not just about managing systems but about delivering results.

The public service in Papua New Guinea is the largest employer in the formal sector, employing approximately 133,000 people in various capacities, making the government the biggest employer in economy and spending 5.7 billion a year on salaries.

Mr Pomaleu told graduates to deliver results.

He said PNG needs a culture of agility for development, and the leadership now will define the next 50 years

Department of Personnel Management Secretary, Taise Sansan , also told graduates that they will shape PNG's future

SILAG reestablished in Highland's region

Meantime, public servants in the Highlands Region can now study back in the region and not travel to Port Moresby to acquire public sector training.

This follows the re-establishment of the Somare Institute of Leadership and Governance, Highlands Regional Training Centre in Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands province.

Chief Executive Officer for SILAG, Michael Barobe says SILAG has delivered good numbers of diploma and certificates in the last four years in the Highlands region.
