The chief justice Sir Gibbs Salika has urged new lawyers admitted to the bar this morning to uphold integrity and ethical standards of the lawyering profession.

Sir Gibbs Salika called on newly admitted lawyers to remain true to the oath they took and uphold the highest ethical standards expected in the legal profession.

He made this statement during the admission of 91 new court lawyers at the Waigani Court Complex this morning.

Sir Gibbs reminded them of the serious responsibility that comes with being an officer of the court.

Thirteen of the new lawyers were admitted before Sir Gibbs in a special session. After hearing each of their applications, he formally admitted them to the bar.

In his address, the Chief Justice emphasized the importance of integrity, urging the new lawyers to remain as fit and proper persons throughout their careers.

He told their lawyers that they had taken an important oath - to serve as lawyers and to uphold the constitution and laws of Papua New Guinea.

He says by taking this oath, it is crucial that they remain true to this promise and carry out their duties with honesty and professionalism.

Sir Gibbs also encouraged the new legal professionals to study the National and Supreme Court rules thoroughly and adhere to the Lawyers' Rules and ethical codes governing their conduct.
