Thirteen police officers in Port Moresby will receive dismissal notices for committing various crimes, including extortion, theft, murder, and the mishandling of police-issued firearms.

Assistant Commissioner of Police and NCD/Central Commander, Benjamin Turi, confirmed that these officers are currently serving time at Bomana while investigations continue into other officers with alleged criminal records.

ACP Turi said that, under the leadership of previous NCD/Central commanders, he has begun reviewing records and files from the past three years.

During this process, he has discovered several unresolved disciplinary cases that have yet to be addressed.

Starting this week, ACP Turi will begin issuing Notices of Penalty to some officers involved.

Many of these cases have been forwarded to the Internal Investigation Unit, while more serious cases are already in court. A significant number of officers have already been incarcerated as a result.

“Some senior officers have been dismissed already; some will be demoted and a number of them will face pay cut.”

“Anybody involved with stealing, killing, extortion, and misplacing police-issued firearms will face immediate dismissal.”

The ACP revealed that some of the firearms have been spotted in the Highlands, where they are being used in tribal fights, which is concerning.

The NCD Commander emphasized that discipline is crucial for any organization to achieve progress and change.

He stated that police officers under his command should view these actions as a positive step by their superiors to ensure that only dedicated and hardworking officers remain in the force.

Mr. Turi said that while many police officers are hardworking, a small minority continues to tarnish the reputation of the entire police force.

He stressed that it was time to clean up the NCD/Central Command and encouraged others to do the same for their respective divisions.
