Kagamuga Airport in Western Highlands Province will undergo a reconstruction of its runways beginning this month [March].

The reconstruction will see an upgrade of asphalt sealing on the runways whereby according to the National Airports Corporation Mt Hagen Manager Paul Rumints was a substandard work done to the runways previously.

Mr. Rumints thanked Hagen Open MP and State Owned Enterprises Minister William Duma and Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa for pushing for this upgrade thus work to start soon.

The reconstruction of the Kagamuga Airport will also cater for the arrival of the jumbo plane this September by Air Nuigini and other planes replacing the aging fokker airplanes.

Work is expected to finish by September this year and travelling publics using Kagamuga Airport are urged to bear with the changes taking place at the airport.

Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa I addition to that said Kagamuga Airport is one of the busiest port in the country as well as it is serving the Highlands region and it is fitting to have big planes apart from Fokker 100 land here.

" Air Nuigini does more sales of tickets especially in Mt Hagen and I use to wonder why aren't big planes like the Boeing 737 not coming to Kagamuga".

"That's when I understand that the runway has to have a strong sealing to cater for this big planes," Rapa said.

Governor Rapa also said once the runways is upgraded with asphalt sealing, Air Nuigini can also cut its flights into Mt Hagen to two to three flights a day compared to the current 5 flights a day.
