Hostplus Cup season opener postponed as Hunters take another week to prepare for round 1

The QRL Host plus Cup competition has postponed all Round 1 matches due to concerns about Cyclone Alfred, which has led to the closure of most airports in Southeast Queensland.
After consulting with all participating clubs, the decision was made to reschedule the matches to a later date, which will be announced in due course.
Despite the announcement, Hunters skipper Ila Alu says they look forward to a thrilling season opener against Mackay Cutters.
Queensland Rugby League confirmed the postponement of all Host Plus Cup Round 1 matches despite rescheduling the games as announced earlier in the morning.
The QRL made every attempt to get teams on the field, while at all times assessing the safety of participants and the wellbeing of their families in line with government advice.
However, due to the delayed arrival of Cyclone Alfred, and not being able to assess its impact prior to matches, they have been deferred.
With airport closures taking effect, Brisbane Tigers and PNG Hunters can no longer transit through Brisbane, meaning their respective Hostplus Cup games in Cairns and Mackay are postponed as well.
PNG Hunters were scheduled to take on the Mackay Cutters at BB Print Stadium on Saturday, but the game will eventuate next weekend.
The teams will now have an additional week to prepare for the much-anticipated season opener next Saturday.
Meanwhile, Hunters skipper Ila Alu admitted his teammates are geared to embark on the new season after earning their place in the final 33-man squad.
The postponement also provides an opportunity for the teams to fine-tune their strategies and address any weaknesses.
The extra week of preparation could prove crucial in setting the tone for a successful season.
