US Coast Guard’s MIDGETT arrives in Port Moresby to strengthen Indo-Pacific security

The United States Coast Guard’s MIDGETT (WMSL-757) arrived at Harborside Port in Port Moresby this morning, marking a significant step in reinforcing maritime security and governance in the Indo-Pacific region.
The ship's arrival underscores the U.S. commitment to maintaining a secure and prosperous maritime environment through collaboration with regional allies.
Commanded by Captain Matthew Roony, the MIDGETT’s deployment highlights the U.S. Coast Guard’s continued efforts to work with partners in ensuring maritime security, combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and promoting responsible maritime practices.
U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Anne-Marie Yatishock, emphasized that the MIDGETT’s presence in the region reflects the enduring partnership between the U.S. and PNG.
"The U.S. Coast Guard’s deployment to this region is part of our ongoing effort to strengthen relationships with partner coast guards and navies across the Indo-Pacific, demonstrating our close cooperation with Papua New Guinea," she said in a statement.
The visit also aims to deepen cooperation in addressing regional maritime vulnerabilities and advancing peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific.
The MIDGETT’s efforts will align with Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) agreements to counter illegal fishing and promote sustainable practices within the region.
