The competition for the PNG Hunters' coveted fullback position is shaping up to be a healthy challenge, according to head coach Paul Aiton.

With Morea Morea fully recovered from injury and Sanny Wabo in top form after the pre-season, Aiton faces tough selection decisions each week.

Adding to the mix is Snax Tigers graduate Douglas David, who is also vying for the number one jersey.
“Sanny was almost shortlisted as the best fullback in the competition last year,” Aiton said.

“There's a lot of competition for the spot, but as we know, it’s a long season. Things change, and I have a lot of confidence in either player to fill that position.”

Aiton also highlighted the emerging talent of David, describing him as a solid performer who consistently does everything right and is pushing hard for the starting spot.

“It’s good to have those options and headaches,” Aiton added.

For the opening round of the Hostplus Cup against the Mackay Cutters this Saturday, Aiton has named Morea to start at fullback, with Wabo coming off the bench.

Wabo, a 2024 Prime Minister’s 13 fullback and a standout performer last season with 13 tries in 22 games, had a key role in the Hunters’ strong season.

However, the return of Morea and his brief pre-season stint with the North Queensland Cowboys has led to a reshuffling, with Wabo now being placed in a reserve role.

“Lucky for myself, I get to play another season, and I look forward to round one,” Wabo said ahead of the season opener.

“There’s big competition for the fullback position. We've got Morea and young Douglas coming up, but I’m happy to play wherever the coach wants me. I just want to improve my game in both attack and defense and be stable in my position.”

As the competition heats up, the addition of young talent Douglas David is adding even more pressure on the established players, intensifying the fight for the number one jumper.

It’s clear that the PNG Hunters' fullback position is one of the most contested spots within the squad this season.
