One more bridge goes down in Madang

One more bridge along the Madang/ Bogia Highway gave way and collapsed this morning, disrupting the flow of traffic between Madang and Bogia.

Numuru Bridge, just past the Malala Secondary School in Ward 21 of Almami Local Level Government, Bogia District collapsed at around quarter to nine this morning, under a tipper truck that was travelling from Madang to Bogia.

Leslie Wali, Director of Lewa Foundation, was on site when the bridge collapsed.

He said there were two other people in the vehicle with the driver, and they both fled as they were shocked, leaving the driver behind.

There were no casualties.

Mr Wali confirmed that the vehicle was carrying a heavy load of gravel for road maintenance in Bogia.

Noah Kool, the Manager for the Department of Works and Highways in Madang, further confirmed the incident saying engineers have travelled to the site to assess the damage.

He added a bypass will be constructed as soon as possible to allow commuters travel with ease.
