The Climate Change Development Authority [CCDA], under the Building Resilience to Climate Change [BRCC] Project, has officially entered into a partnership with Sportfishing Limited to enhance transportation and emergency response capabilities in climate-affected areas.

At a recent signing ceremony, the two organizations announced a significant agreement that will see the delivery of four fully equipped passenger boats, valued at K2.5 million [K2,473,069.40] to service the people of the Atolls in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

BRCC Project Director Jacob Ekinye emphasized the importance of these boats in terms of both safety and cost-efficiency.

"These boats are more than just transportation; they are a lifeline for the Fead, Carterets, Mortlock, and Tasman communities. With modern navigation tools and powerful engines, they will improve access to essential services, support disaster preparedness, and strengthen our ongoing climate resilience efforts. Ensuring safety is paramount, even if it comes at a cost", Ekinye said.

With the capacity to carry up to 2,100 kilograms-combining both cargo and passengers, the boats measure 32 feet in length and are designed to meet both daily transportation needs and emergency response requirements.

The boats powered by two 200HP outboard motors, will be maintained by the people of the Atolls communities.

They come equipped with a range of navigational and safety accessories, including Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons [EPIRBs], GPS systems with base maps, and protective canvas covers to ensure durability and safety in challenging conditions.

The partnership is a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to build climate resilience and provide vital resources to communities in need.

"I also thank Sports Fishing Limited for responding to our call to customize the boats to meet the sea conditions of the Solomon Seas and provide accessories specifically for the Islanders' requirements," Ekinye said.
