Hela Governor denounces gruesome murder of teacher in Tari

Hela Governor Philip Undialu, has expressed profound sadness and outrage over the recent brutal murder of Rickson Poko, a dedicated young teacher at Pai Hope Institute in Tari, Hela Province.

Governor Undialu said this killing is totally unacceptable and its a significant loss for the immediate family members, Enga Province and the education sector in Hela and the country as a whole.

He said late Poko's decision to serve in Hela reflects his dedication to nurture young minds and forge better future for the children and such heartless manner is a senseless act in the strongest possible terms.

“I have been informed that this crime occurred under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol-fueled violence has claimed too many innocent lives,” he said.

Governor Undialu added that two weeks ago Hela Provincial Government had inaugurated the Provincial Liquor Licensing Board and instituted a beer ban, which took effect on February 28, 2025.

“In light of this recent tragedy, I have instructed the Chairman of the Provincial Liquor Licensing Board, Provincial Administrator Marago Dagoba, and his board to enforce this ban immediately and comprehensively. All remaining liquor must be removed from Hela Province without exception,” he said.

Meanwhile, Governor Undialu thanked members of Pai community for swiftly apprehending the perpetrator and his accomplice, who were turned over to the police.

He said justice must be upheld and that the law should be fully applied to those accountable.

He extended his deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and loved ones of the late Poko.

“Your son, brother, and mentor had a promising future ahead, and his legacy will endure. This was the act of a heartless individual who is now in custody.

“The Pai Hope and Hela communities stand with you during this challenging time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Meantime, he urged the people of Hela to unite in the fight against violence and alcohol abuse to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
