Lae tidal basin continues to see significant improvements

The arrival of the 4th largest ship in the world ,CMA CGM Perth earlier this week, shows proof that Lae Ports gradually changing to serve as a gateway for exports and Imports, handling significant volumes of containerized and bulk cargoes.

The PNG Ports Company Limited and ICTSI together hosted a small but very significant ceremony to welcome the big ship on Wednesday in Lae, Morobe Province.

PNG Ports CEO Niel Pepenfus at the ceremony said Lae Tidal Basin is the major shipping and trading hub, the largest and busiest port for economic progress, trade efficiency and industrial developments in PNG.

"The arrival of CMA CGM Perth marks a significant milestone in their commitment to strengthening maritime trade, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and fostering economic growth in PNG," Papenfus said.

Sharing similar sediments, PNG Ports Chairman, Harvey Nii also on the occasion stressed on the improvements that have increased the port's efficiency, reduced congestion, and enhanced the country's connectivity with global markets.

He said the facility now allows for large vessels to dock, allowing for an increase in trade in and out of the country.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nii added that the world-class terminal operations by ICTSI have increased PNGs trade capacity, boosting economic development.

He noted the expansion included the tidal basin, funded by and the recent installation of bollard at the tidal basins quay length beyond its original 24o meters, allowing larger vessels to berth safely and efficiently.

The facility is earmarked to receive further extansion of quality line by 150 meters, to be funded by the Australian Government.
