Prime Minister James Marape has challenged citizens to put the interest of the nation first rather than their self-interests.

Marape said people must carry on the legacy and character of the country's first Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare as the country reaches its 50th independence.

Marape during the 4th commemoration anniversary of the late Sir Michael Somare reflected on the character of the grand chief, a leader who put the interest of the country first.

The Prime Minister encouraged everyone to work collectively to make PNG a rich country into the future based on Somare’s valuable legacy, that must be carried on by all Papua New Guineans.

NCD Governor Powes Parkop reflected on the important roles Sir Michael played in leading young Papua New Guinean leaders to obtain independence for the country.

Parkop said the founding fathers had a very difficult task to achieve as they were trying to unite a thousand tribe under one flag.

He said PNG's independence was the fruit, sweats and efforts of Sir Michael and his team of founding fathers.

As the country prepares to celebrate its 50th independence Anniversary, grand chief’s son Arthur Somare has challenged PNG to remain united into the next five decades.

Arthur Somare acknowledged everyone for remembering the great man and his team of like-minded leaders.

He thanked other founding fathers especially the family of late Sir Julius Chan for supporting late Sir Michael Somare in obtaining independence for PNG.
