New Ireland province commemorate Sir Michael Somare

Wreaths were laid at Sir Michael Somare's monument, at the Stanfield Memorial Park, Kavieng.

Kavieng town came to a standstill this morning, when a ceremonial march around town led by joined forces, from the Kavieng Correctional Services, Fire service, and town rangers, and representative of Urban schools silently march through the town.

Kavieng town Mayor -Greg Toxie Seth, was present to officiate at the memorial program. Also present were, members of the public and private sector, senior executives of the New Ireland Provincial Administration, Acting Commander CS -Chief Inspector Barry Jaro, Kavieng fire service -Inspector Francis Yapok, parents, students and members of the public.

Whilst New Ireland still mourns the loss of its great leader, and Governor of the province, -Right Honourable -Sir Julius Chan, this commemoration came momentous, as reflections captured both founding father’s dreams of a united nation -PNG.

Indicating in the flag raising ceremony, where both flags of New Ireland and PNG were raised to half-mast, with a minute of silence.

Field Officer- Kavieng Urban Local Level Government, Bennis Tuka in paying tribute says, “Today, as we look forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea, we look back and honour his dream, by continuing to build a united and prosperous Papua New Guinea.”

The program continues in the day with speeches and laying of writs. It will be complemented with poems, and quiz by participating primary schools in Kavieng Urban.

Meantime, in other parts of New Ireland, church services, traditional ceremonies, and speeches are taking place today to honor the life and leadership of Sir Michael Somare.
