The PNG National Rugby League Competition today announced that there will be no new franchises entering the competition in next year’s Digicel ExxonMobil Cup.
A media statement was released today confirming the participation of the 12 existing franchises, which are reigning champions Mt Hagen Eagles, Enga Mioks, Lae Tigers, Port Moresby Vipers, Gulf Isou, Central Dabaris, Mendi Muruks, Waghi Tumbe, Kimbe Cutters, Goroka Lahanis, ENB Gurias and Hela Wigmen.
PNG NRLC Chairman Adrian Chow said the process to expand the competition was challenging, thus, the board decided to stick with the 12 existing franchises for next year, following a detailed analysis and assessment of all clubs.
The PNGNRLC also acknowledged the strong submissions by the Morobe Kandes and Simbu Warriors, stating that they will continue to work closely with them for successful entry in the future.
General Manager of Pathways and Performance, Tony Archer acknowledged the valued sponsors and the board for confirming the 12 franchises for the 2025 playing calendar.
“It is always a difficult process but collectively it is so valuable as we aim to improve the game across our clubs and ourselves,” Archer said.
“Our focus is to support our clubs in becoming strong, sustainable pathways for players, coaches, support staff.
Archer explained that today is difficult for potential clubs to enter, however he had spoken with them.
“They are aware of the specific areas in which we will continue to work with them to ensure they are ready to come into the competition in the future.”
Several clubs will be starting their preseason in the coming weeks, in preparation for the April 2025 start, with the PNG NRLC set to announce the full draw before Christmas.
