The much-anticipated off-season rugby league tournament in the KCK Rigo Rice Cup is set for launch this weekend with a K300,000 prize money on offer.

Tournament organising committee in a media statement released today confirmed that games will be launched on Sunday after a week-long deferral.

Rigo Rice tournament chief executive officer Mcsteve Polly said the deferral was due to muddled arrangements between KCK Rigo Rice Cup and the venue management at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium.

“The venue management’s slight confusion with us and several other clients who booked the venue earlier has resulted in this deferral,” Polly said.

“On this juncture, we are delighted to confirm that the Sir. Hubert Murray Stadium at Konedobu has been paid for and so, the long awaited KCK Rigo Rice Cup will be launched on the 24th of November.”

The rugby 13’s games will be played across the selected suburbs in Port Moresby which will feature teams from Moresby North East and West, Moresby South, Motu Koita and Tertiary Institutions.

More than 50 teams have indicated to participate with the inaugural champion to pocket K200,000 and K60,000 for the runner-up whist third-placed team takes home K40,000.

Polly said participating teams and management are cordially invited to attend the launch as kickoff dates and games schedule will be revealed during the launch.

The Rigo Rice Cup CEO reiterated that the inaugural edition of the grassroots rugby league tournament was aimed at exposing young talents in alignment with the PNGNRL Bid vision.
