Central Dabaris try-scoring ace Bartholomew Evi’s potential future in the Hostplus Cup has been creased into doubts after PNG Hunters overlooked him.

The 2024 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup ‘Rookie of The Year’ and ‘People’s Choice Award’ winner, has spoken of his shock omission from the Hunters train-and-trial squad, which has sparked debate over social media.

Evi was not included in the Hunters 41-man squad for preseason despite having a breakout year in his maiden season in the PNG National Rugby League Competition.

Rugby league fans and followers have stormed social media, seeking reasons why, the Dabaris speedster was not included in Hunter's roaster for the 2025 preseason.

However, Evi has accepted his fate, admitting to working harder for a possible Hunter call-up in the future.

“I appreciate all the support I’m getting but please the list is out already,” Evi shared on his social media platform [Facebook].

“I’m not on the list, meaning I need to work on my grey areas to be a better player. I’m still young I have a long way to go.

“God’s timing is better in everything you do, and everything happens for a reason.”

Evi produced some of the stunning long-range tries in the competition, which saw him finish as the third top try scorer [13] behind Sefa Dait and Dominic Anis, who scored 14 tries apiece.

The Dabaris flyer displayed an entertaining brand of footy backed by his unique skills and blistering speed that caught the attention of league supporters, dubbing himself as one of the fan favorites in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup.

Capping off a memorable year with two prestigious awards ensured he would be considered for possible Hunters selection, but fans including Evi, were devastated when the list was revealed early this week.

The Paul Aiton-coached Hunters are in the second week of the first phase of preseason which started at the beginning of this month and will conclude on December 18.

Meanwhile, the Mekeo native is currently in preseason training with Dabaris in preparation for the 2025 PNGNRLC window.

Despite missing the Hunter's opportunity, Evi said his focus is to help the Gas Resources-sponsored club earn a spot in the finals after finishing 7th this year.
