The provincial capital of Hela is expected to be a site of happiness with the opening of its first proper public market.

Hundreds of people have gathered in Tari today anticipating the arrival of local MP and Prime Minister James Marape and other provincial MPs.

Since gaining provincial status in 2012, locals had to sell their produce directly on the ground in a open market in Tari Town.

Hela Governor Philip Undialu said the provincial government is committed to enhancing police manpower, providing accommodation, and offering logistical support.

He believes visibility of police will make the market a conducive for sellers and buyers and with the new market facility, well-fenced, will help curb illegal activities.
