PNG to address International Court of Justice

PNG will for the first time participate at the International Court of Justice [ICJ] located in the Netherlands in December.
This was announced during the recent Pacific Regional ICJ Climate Change Advisory Opinion workshop in Nadi, Fiji.
PNG through the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General has formally registered its intention to deliver an oral statement concerning climate change.
PNG's participation in the ICJ process will amplify the voices of Pacific Island nations grappling with the direct impacts of rising sea levels and shifting weather patterns.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister James Marape during the recent 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, emphasized that PNG’s vast rain-forests, rich biodiversity, marine life, and indigenous cultures stand at a crossroads.
The prime minister highlighted the importance of global partnerships in protecting the world’s remaining tropical rain-forests, which serve has vital components of the Earth’s lungs.
Marape further called for equitable compensation and access to climate finance for PNG and other forest nations to support the sustainable management of their natural resources while tackling the global climate crisis.
