PNG Hunters wrap up incredible 2024 season with a strong preliminary finals finish

The SP PNG Hunters capped off a remarkable 2024 rugby league season, finishing with a thrilling run to the Hostplus Cup Preliminary Finals.

Despite narrowly missing out on a spot in the Grand Final, the Hunters have much to be proud of, showcasing growth, resilience, and talent throughout the season.

The Hunters, led by head coach Paul Aiton, consistently displayed their fighting spirit, overcoming numerous challenges to stand among the competition’s top teams.

This season was defined by a blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent, all of which culminated in a gritty finals campaign that captivated fans across the Pacific.

Season Standout Performers Honored

As the season ended, the SP PNG Hunters held their annual awards night, celebrating the outstanding individual performances that contributed to the team's success.

The following players were honored for their exceptional contributions:

  • Rookie of the Year-Finley Glare

Glare made an immediate impact in his debut season, showcasing immense potential and earning the title of Rookie of the Year. His speed, determination, and work ethic set him apart as one of the Hunters’ brightest future stars.

  • Best Back-Sany Wabo

Wabo’s exceptional speed, vision, and playmaking ability consistently broke down opposition defenses. His tireless efforts on both sides of the ball were pivotal in the Hunters’ successful campaign, earning him the accolade of Best Back.

  • Best Forward-Valentine Richard

Richard’s presence in the forward pack was felt throughout the season. His powerful running, hard-hitting defense, and relentless work rate in the middle of the park made him a standout in every game.

  • Coaches Award-Ila Alu

The Coaches Award, given to the player who best embodies the Hunters' values of hard work, commitment, and leadership, was presented to Ila Alu. Alu’s professionalism and consistent performances have been instrumental both on and off the field.

  • Club Person of the Year-Jamie Mavoko

Mavoko’s contributions extended beyond the field of play. His dedication to the club, community engagement, and leadership exemplified the spirit of the Hunters, making him a deserving winner of the Club Person of the Year award.

  • Player of the Year-Judah Rimbu

In an outstanding season, Judah Rimbu was crowned Player of the Year. His game-breaking performances, versatility, and relentless determination have made him a cornerstone of the team’s success in 2024.

  • Players Player-Judah Rimbu

Voted by his peers, Rimbu also took home the prestigious Players’ Player Award, further underscoring his influence and respect within the playing group. His consistency and leadership have been a beacon of excellence for the Hunters all year.

Head coach Paul Aiton expressed his pride in the team’s performance.

“It’s been an incredible journey this year,” Aiton said of his rookie season as Hunters coach.

“The boys showed tremendous heart and resilience, and we’ve seen real growth both as individuals and as a team.

“While we fell just short of the ultimate goal, we’ll come back stronger next year.”
