SP Hunters second-row Sherwin Tanabi was released by the club early this year upon request to study abroad.

Tanabi is amongst a host of players including Benji Kot, Junior Igila and Siki Konden, omitted from the Hunters final 30-man squad for the 2024 Queensland Rugby League competition.

After receiving social media backlash on the omission of these players, the Hunters have notably clarified that Tanabi voluntarily asked for a release to go and study in Australia.

The Hunters welcomed Tanabi’s decision and favorably granted his request to venture on a new career path.

The former Lae Snax Tiger made his debut in 2022 and has been with the club for two seasons. According to the Hunters management, the 23-year-old will continue to train with the Paul Aiton-coached side until his visa is approved to study overseas.

Meanwhile, PNG Kumuls barnstorming forward Valentine Richard has been signed by Hunters for the 2024 season as part of a player-swap agreement with the Central Queensland Capras.

Richard was contracted by Capras on a 1-year deal, however, due to visa issues he will feature the SP Brewery-sponsored club until the matter is sorted out. Hunters are helping Richard to get this issue rectified for him to join the Rockhampton-based club.

In return the Hunters are also helping to give Manu Sent an opportunity to go and train with the Central Queensland Capras.

Hunters chief executive officer Scott Barker said the Hostplus Cup franchises have formed a pronounced relationship over the past couple of seasons and look forward to strengthening it.

“They hosted us for a trial in Gladstone this year and we will return the favor next year and host them here,” Barker said.
