Dela Cruz lays down plans to improve coaching and player development

Newly-appointed PNG Basketball Federation national coaching director Gavin Dela Cruz is focused on achieving several key objectives to enhance coaching and player development under his capacity.
These plans include defining a unique national style of play, establishing clear pathways for coaches and players, improving coaching education initiatives, and implementing comprehensive player development programs.
Speaking exclusively to this newsroom, Dela Cruz said these efforts are geared towards fostering growth, improving skill levels, and ensuring a positive experience for all involved in the coaching community.
He was recently appointed to the top post early this year and has his sights set on progressing coaching perspectives in the country.
“Firstly, I want to see a clear and defined style of play that suits our teams' strengths and goals,” the national men’s (5x5) assistant coach told NBC News.
“Secondly, there should be pathways laid out for coaches to grow and improve, giving them the tools they need to succeed.
“There's a need for better coaching education programs, ensuring coaches are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge.”
Apart from building the coaching capacity, Dela Cruz also is emphasizing the importance of holistic player development, which includes both on-court skills and life skills.
“By focusing on these areas, we can elevate coaching and create a supportive environment for coaches and players alike,” he said.
Dela Cruz was tasked with numerous coaching duties last year, starting with the Under-17 Oceania Championships, where he guided the PNG U17 men’s team in the regional meet in Port Moresby.
He continued the drill in the 2023 Pacific Games in Solomon Islands as the assistant coach for the PNG men’s representative side.
Piled with experience in this field, Dela Cruz is determined that his appointment will also benefit the playing groups in both junior and senior players
“I am determined to elevate the standard of basketball in PNG,” he said.
“My primary goal is to implement a structured coaching system that will enhance the skills and capabilities of coaches at all levels.
“By establishing clear criteria for each coaching level and providing comprehensive training modules tailored to the specific needs of coaches, we can ensure that the coaching standards improve significantly.
Regular assessments will help track progress and identify areas for improvement.”
He said the introduction of the role of the national coaching director will also provide a guiding light for the highest level of coaching excellence in PNG basketball.
Through continuous review and adaptation, Dela Cruz is confident that PNG can create a supportive and effective system that will lead to a noticeable elevation in the standard of basketball across the country.
