Toako claims women’s javelin gold for PNG at Pacific Games

Papua New Guinea’s Sharon Toako retained her Pacific Games women’s javelin crown at Honiara’s National Stadium on Thursday.
Toako’s throw of 45.49 metres was enough to secure victory, ahead of New Caledonia’s Lesly Filituulaga, whose best throw landed at 41.98m.
Toako, who also won gold at the Samoa 2019 Pacific Games with a throw of 47.13m, told the Pacific Games News Service the victory came easier than expected due to a smaller field of competitors in Honiara.
“It was an easy event, there were not many competitors. My throw was 45 metres something, which is not competitive, so it was an easy win,” she said.
Solomon Islands athlete Stephany Sukeitaoha secured bronze with a throw of 39.35m.
Meanwhile, PNG’s Abigail Tere-Apisah and Mathew Stubbings added to the country’s medal tally by claiming the tennis mixed doubles title.

The pair defeated Tahiti’s pairing of Mehetia Boodisie and Antoine Vosin in straight sets (6-3, 6-0) in Wednesday’s gold medal match at Honiara’s National Tennis Centre.
“I am just really so happy with today’s win. It is even sweeter that we have managed to go one better than we did four years ago, losing in the final of this event. It is always really special to win a medal, let alone win gold for your country. I am indeed grateful for the support, especially having my partner and son here with me – so it is extra special for me,” Tere-Apisah told the Pacific Games News Service after taking the second set without losing a point.
Stubbings added: “To get over 2019’s finals disappointment and win gold here at Sol2023 is pretty amazing. Thank you for all the support and the love we’ve received here – which is amazing.”
