ACP Dalla calls for accountability and better management
Accountability and management were the main focus of the Highlands Eastern End Police Command's third-quarter meeting in Mt Hagen last week.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Clement Dalla says police commanders must take responsibility for their duties and ensure that issues raised during previous meetings are properly addressed.
Speaking at the meeting held at Airport Motel, ACP Dalla said the quarterly gatherings were important for reviewing police operations, identifying challenges and finding ways to improve service delivery.
He said the meeting brought together Provincial Police Commanders and other senior officers responsible for policing in Western Highlands, Jiwaka and Simbu provinces.
“Our agenda is normally centred around issues that affect our operations, the challenges we face and what we can do to improve on them.
“Much of the discussion during this one day third quarter meet was around accountability and management because this is a high-level management meeting for the command and that whatever items, issues at the PPCs closure must be reported back to the command with accountability and prudent management,” ACP Dalla said.
Dalla said police commanders discussed several issues affecting their daily operations, including logistics, funding and manpower shortages.
He stressed these challenges were common across government departments, but police must continue finding ways to work around them to ensure people receive the security and protection they need.
The meeting also reviewed action points carried forward from the previous two quarterly meetings.
ACP Dalla added some of the issues raised earlier had yet to be addressed, prompting him to urge provincial commanders to explain the progress they had made.
“Some of the agenda items were carried forward from our previous two quarterly meetings. Most of them were action items that had not been acted on.
“I urged the PPCs to go through each of these items and tell us exactly what they have done so far to address the issues raised of which the three PPCs of Simbu, Jiwaka, and Western Highlands have put forward." Dalla said.
He also said the quarterly meetings were not only about discussing problems but also about ensuring that decisions made by the command led to action.
The meetings cover both operational performance and administrative requirements, with the aim of improving the overall management of police services across the three provinces.
The Highlands Eastern End Police Divisional Commander added that the command would continue using these meetings to assess its performance, address outstanding issues and improve the way police services are delivered.
For the Highlands Eastern End Command, stronger accountability and management remain important in overcoming operational challenges and ensuring police officers can effectively carry out their duties.
