Huge hectares of rubber blocks, food gardens and sago palms have been destroyed following a massive bushfire that swept through four villages in Delta Fly District of Western Province. The bush fire started last month and is continuing.

The fire started at Kawito and spread to Pisi, Pikiwa and Paputa villages. Locals said the source of the fire is unknown.

Aramia LLG President and Deputy Governor for Western Province, Mr. Abini Gesele confirmed the bushfire. He told NBC News that thick smoke from the fire disturbed a MAF plane that attempted to land this week, but it later landed safely.

He urged people not to light fires in the bush during this dry period, saying it is very dangerous.

Meanwhile, another local said the fire dies down at night but flares up again when the sun picks up between 10am and 12pm.

No casualties have been reported; however, food gardens and sago palms were destroyed and affected families who depend on rubber and gardens for food and income are now calling for assistance.
