The West Sepik Provincial Health Authority (WSPHA) is continuing its full operations despite the prolonged dry season affecting the province and other parts of the country.

While several schools and health centers nationwide have scaled down operations due to water shortages, WSPHA Chief Executive Officer Stanley Masi says Vanimo General Hospital is not affected.

Mr. Masi told NBC News the hospital has a water bore well source that supplies water for toilets, laundry and general cleaning, while rainwater tanks are used for drinking water for both patients and staff.

Meanwhile, CEO Masi confirmed the Authority is yet to receive any El Nino funding from the National Department of Health, the National Government or the Sandaun Provincial Government to support rural health facilities.

"For us in Vanimo, the hospital is doing fine. Our main concern is Telefomin, which is now experiencing severe drought and water shortage. Other centers affected, include Nuku, Aitape and Lumi who are now scaling down on some of its services," Mr. Masi said.

The National Government has released El Nino funds to provincial and district administrations to support essential services like health and education, Mr. Masi hopes the PHA will receive a portion to support its district hospitals and health centers.

Mr. Masi added that it is time the National Government funds PHAs directly, rather than channeling funds through the National Department of Health.
