Madang is no place for harbouring criminals, says PPC Baim
Madang's Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Robert Baim, has reiterated that Madang is no place for harbouring criminals.
He has also warned in the strongest term possible that any Persons Of Interest from other provinces who have fled to Madang and are taking refuge with families or relatives will be flushed out in the nastiest mean possible.
He sounded the warning following the destruction of four dwelling houses in Sisiak 2.
Police believe certain Wewak- based POIs were involved in the destructions.
He emphasised, "Police will not hesitate to conduct family eviction on families that continue to harbour criminals elements in Madang. Madang has no place for such people."
Two of the destroyed houses belonged to Chambri families, 1 Maprik and the other to a Parimbe family. All are innocent victims.
Police have also identified 15 suspects who were directly involved in the arson cases, including the Wewak- based POIs.
The POIs are allegedly taking advantage of the situation to attack innocent residents and intimidate peaceful members of the community.
Nine of them have been apprehended and are in police custody.
Police alleged that the nine suspects have been identified as having been involved in other crimes, including bag snatching, stealing with violence, arson, and armed robbery; especially between Sisiak and Beon Road.
Superintendent Baim said that following the incident, the Sisiak 2 community mobilised and retaliated in a coordinated manner, resulting in the suspects decamping the area.
He is also urging the community to continue to support lawful policing efforts and to avoid vigilante actions.
The motive behind the attacks remains uncertain at this stage, although police believe it could be linked to a previous armed robbery at Sisiak 2 some two to three weeks ago, which led to the death of a suspect involved in that robbery.
Meanwhile, PPC Baim stressed in his independence message yesterday for everyone living in Madang Town to contribute to the positive development of the province.
He stated, "If you are from another province or from the rural districts who have come to live in Madang Town and regard it as your home, at least be part of its development. If you cannot, then pack up and go home. There are many good things to do at home rather than wasting your time in urban areas."
To the criminals, Baim said police operations are ongoing, and officers will continue to bring to justice all individuals involved in the arson snd other related offences.
Police are also urging Madang residents, especially those around the Sisiak areas, to report suspicious activities promptly, as well as provide credible information to CID members to assist the investigation.
