Police arrest 32 in Enga independence crackdown

Police in Enga arrested 32 people for various summary offences as part of a major Independence law enforcement blitz across the province.

Acting Provincial Police Commander [PPC] Chief Inspector Daniel Yangen confirmed the arrests, which target reckless road behaviour, illegal gambling, public drunkenness, and drinking inside moving Public Motor Vehicles [PMVs]. Both drivers and bus crews were arrested for allowing passengers to consume alcohol on board.

Chief Inspector Yangen admitted that many of these summary offences had become normalised over the years due to lax law enforcement by police.

However, he assured the public that despite manpower shortages, he will strictly enforce the law at all levels during his tenure as Acting PPC and Wabag Police Station Commander.

In a direct warning to his own family and community members, Chief Inspector Yangen cautioned against relying on traditional ties to avoid prosecution. He warned that relatives attempting to use the wantok system for leniency would be charged with obstructing police duties.

Police have also announced strict bail conditions to deter offenders during the 51st Independence anniversary celebrations including; unlicensed sale of alcohol – K5,000 bail; public alcohol consumption and homebrew offences – K1,000 bail; illegal gambling including Bingo and card games – K1,000 bail; fighting in public places – K1,000 bail; and, cultivating, selling, or possessing marijuana – No bail.

While urging the public to celebrate the nation’s 51st Independence anniversary peacefully and responsibly, Chief Inspector Yangen stressed that police will maintain zero tolerance for lawlessness across Enga Province.
