The local economy in the Hayapuga local level government [LLG] of Hela is set for a major boost following the launch of a new market project aimed at unlocking trade and generating income for rural communities.

The newly established Halimbu Building Construction Company launched operations in Tari-Pori yesterday with its maiden project; the construction of the Halimbu Market.

Company founder Steven Halimbu said the market is strategically located at the Three Corner junction to capture trade from travellers moving between Hides, Komo, Koroba, Lake Kopiago, Tari town, and the Highlands Highway.

Halimbu said establishing commercial infrastructure is vital to sustaining peace and driving economic recovery following years of destructive tribal fighting in the area.

“Hayapuga LLG has been known for tribal fights for many years. Now peace has been restored and our people who fled are returning,” he said.

“We will ensure our people who are seeking refuge elsewhere return. Many of our educated elites living outside of the province will also return.

“For that to happen, we must work together to make sure our schools, churches, and health facilities are operational.”

Halimbu added that the firm plans to reinvest in local community projects as it expands.

“This company belongs to our people. We are starting small, but we believe one day it will grow and generate income to support community initiatives,” he said.

“After the market is constructed, the company will move on to improving other community infrastructure.”

The initiative will open a new chapter of economic activity, local investment, and service delivery for the people of Hayapuga.
