Hewabi resigns from PRP, joins Pangu Pati

Middle Fly MP Maso Hewabi has resigned from the People’s Reform Party [PRP] and joined the Government benches with ruling Pangu Pati.

In a statement released today, PRP Founder and North Fly MP James Donald confirmed the resignation.

Donald said Hewabi was a valued member of the PRP’s three-person Parliamentary Wing, which includes East Sepik governor Allan Bird.

James said Hewabi’s decision was guided by his commitment to maintaining tribal unity in Middle Fly. The PRP said this was supported by his deep family and tribal ties to Western province Governor Taboi Awi Yoto.

Donald said the decision was made after consultation with party leader Bird and endorsement by the PRP National Executives.

“Following consultation with our Party Leader, Hon. Allan Bird, and subsequent endorsement by the Party’s National Executive, we have agreed to release Hon. Hewabi to preserve goodwill and harmony within his tribe,” Donald stated.

The PRP thanked Hewabi for his dedication during his time with the party and wished him well in the next chapter of his political journey.

Donald said the party remains focused on reform ahead of the 2027 National Elections.

“The People’s Reform Party remain resolute in its mission to drive meaningful reform for Papua New Guinea. As we look toward the 2027 National Elections, we stand unwavering in our conviction – we are steadfast and unrelenting in our pursuit of a new direction for our country,” he said.
