Helen Roalakona becomes PNG’s first female Public Prosecutor

Female Legal eagle Helen Roalakona has made history as Papua New Guinea's first female Public Prosecutor, taking the helm of the country's criminal justice system for a six-year term.

Her appointment was confirmed following a rigorous screening and selection process conducted by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission [JLSC], where she emerged as the top candidate.

Justice Minister and Attorney-General Pila Niningi commended the appointment, describing it as a landmark moment for gender equality and public sector leadership.

"This is a historic breakthrough for institutional leadership within our justice sector," Mr Niningi said.

He added that Ms Roalakona’s extensive legal background and track record would provide strong, merit-based guidance to the Office of the Public Prosecutor.

Her appointment marks the first time a woman has been selected to lead the statutory office since PNG gained independence.
