18th Sepik River crocodile & arts festival kicks off

Festivities of the three-day show that promotes the rich cultural heritage of the Sepik River and draws visitors into East Sepik started today.

The 18th Sepik River Crocodile & Arts Festival was officially opened this morning by Ambunti local level government [LLG] president Edward Wiruk with a strong emphasis to improve tourism in the Sepik River region.

"We need to bring back the glory days of Ambunti, Angoram, Gawi, and Ambunti must collaborate and bring tourists back," Wiruk said.

"Tourism of cultural events has contributed to cultural, social, and economic development of the region."

Sharing similar sentiments, Provincial Minister of Culture and Tourism Godfrey Wakraai, revealed plans to revive dying cultures in the province.

Wakraai, the president of Gawanga LLG in Ambunti Drekikir district was among the dignitaries in attendance during the opening ceremony of the festival.

The 18th Sepik River Crocodile & Arts Festival rides under the theme 'Keeping and strengthening tourism through Arts, Culture, and Environment'.

The first day of activities showcased a variety of performances from different cultural groups from both Sepik River communities their neighbors - Wosera and Maprik.

The festival is sponsored by a number of groups including Frieda River Limited [FRL] - a partner that has been committed to supporting the show since 2011.
