Authorities in Wewak, East Sepik have confirmed two deaths following a violent confrontation at Kauk village within the last 24 hours.

The first victim, Alfred Marau, sustained two grass knife wounds to the head and died from blood loss. His alleged attacker, Alfred Saudum, was later killed in a retaliatory attack that also saw houses burned and properties destroyed in Dagua.

Police have identified four prime suspects linked to the second killing, with a formal complaint expected to be lodged and referred to the Criminal Investigation Division [CID].

Investigators say the violence was triggered by an alcohol-fueled argument over a missing mobile phone, escalating into wounding, loss of life, payback murder, and arson.

Meanwhile, infrastructure teams have reported progress in clearing a landslide along the West Coast Highway, restoring access for motorists. At Mindieng, a makeshift bridge has been put in place to allow vehicles to cross safely.
