A Grade 12 student from Maprik Secondary School was killed, and school property was vandalized in a violent confrontation at the school grounds on Saturday night.

Police confirmed that the deceased, Sirol Beisim, 23, from Albinama village, Maprik District, was attacked during the incident and later died at the Maprik Health Centre

According to reports, the violence erupted between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. when two truckloads of students returned from Wewak after winning a rugby football match. Intoxicated youths allegedly confronted the students at the school gate, sparking an argument that escalated into the destruction of school property.

The attackers vandalized key offices, including those of the principal, deputy principal, and Bursar. During the confrontation, Beisim was assaulted and fatally wounded.

Maprik Police attended the scene, cordoned off the area, and deployed manpower to secure school assets, staff, and students. Authorities say the suspects remain at large, and efforts are underway with community leaders to ensure their surrender.

PPC Superintendent Christopher Tamari confirmed the situation remains tense, with police maintaining presence at the school to prevent further escalation.

Tamari has further urged restraint, saying: “We are calling on all students, staff, and community members to remain calm and maintain order while police investigations continue. Reinforcement will be sought to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
