U.S fulbright program selects PNG scientist for prestigious visiting scholar fellowship

A senior lecturer in pharmacy at the University of Papua New Guinea, Dr. Martha Yahimbu, will conduct postdoctoral research in pharmacology at the University of Utah for the next five months under a Fulbright Visiting Fellowship.

During her Fulbright program at the University of Utah, Dr. Yahimbu will conduct advanced pharmacological research, including studying the effectiveness of antibacterial agents against drug-resistant infections, an area of increasing global health concern.

The University of Utah is home to a highly regarded pharmacology and biomedical research community, offering cutting-edge facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities.

Through this program, Dr. Yahimbu will engage with leading researchers and contribute to efforts to address antimicrobial resistance and improve therapeutic outcomes worldwide.

Dr. Yahimbu is a leading Papua New Guinean scientist specializing in drug discovery and pharmacology.

As a senior lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences, she has dedicated her career to advancing research on infectious diseases and training the next generation of scientists.

Her work focuses on identifying and developing treatments derived from Papua New Guinea’s rich biodiversity, including medicinal plants and marine organisms, with applications for diseases such as tuberculosis and other neglected tropical diseases.

Dr. Yahimbu’s participation highlights the important role of education and research partnerships in addressing global challenges between U.S and Papua New Guinea.
