A robbery suspect is in custody after being accidentally shot by his own accomplices following a heist at the Manu Cash and Carry store this afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2:00pm, prompting a swift response from police that forced three other armed suspects to flee the scene in a waiting getaway vehicle.

According to authorities, the wounded suspect was apprehended by members of the public while attempting to escape. A struggle ensued as the suspect fought those holding him down. In a desperate bid to free him, one of his accomplices opened fire, accidentally shooting the suspect instead.

Two local taxi drivers who were at the scene were also injured by the armed men during the commotion. Following the shooting, the remaining criminals scrambled into their getaway car and fled the area.

NCD/Central Commander Benjamin Turi commended the quick response of the police officers, noting that the wounded suspect was actively trying to evade capture when the shooting occurred.

Commander Turi stated that investigators expect to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects currently on the run, leveraging interviews with the wounded suspect and a thorough review of CCTV footage from the shop.

Police records indicate a recent spike in armed robberies and car thefts across the National Capital District in recent weeks. In response, police are intensifying operations to track down and prosecute those involved in the criminal upsurge.

Meanwhile, Commander Turi issued a stern warning to the public to give way to police vehicles during emergency responses.

"When police are responding to such cases, the public must make way so officers can maintain visual contact with fleeing criminals and carry out their duties effectively," Turi said. "You risk becoming a victim of crossfire if a shootout occurs between police and criminals."
