PM Marape seeks international help to evacuate PNG citizens from UAE

Prime Minister James Marape has formally requested international consular assistance to evacuate Papua New Guinean citizens from the United Arab Emirates [UAE] following a sharp escalation in Middle East tensions.

The request comes in response to the conflict between Iran and Israel that intensified on February 28, 2026, sparking a regional security crisis over the weekend.

Because Papua New Guinea currently lacks a diplomatic presence in the UAE, the government is turning to foreign partners to ensure the safety of its citizens. Prime Minister Marape announced he will write to UAE President, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to coordinate support for PNG citizens.

Additionally, the Prime Minister confirmed that his government will seek help from the Australian Government.

PNG is asking that its citizens be included in the contingency and evacuation plans managed by the Australian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

These plans would be activated if the security situation warrants a full repatriation of foreign nationals.

Expressing deep concern for those caught in the crisis, Marape said his government’s thoughts and prayers are with the citizens living in the UAE and surrounding countries.

"It is my government's hope and desire that an amicable truce is reached between all parties concerned for the total restoration of regional and global peace and security," Marape said.

The Prime Minister’s office continues to monitor the situation as regional stability remains uncertain.
