Vagi rejects social media claims in Dei by-election
Acting Electoral Commissioner Margaret Vagi has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging bribery and hijacking in the Dei By-Election.
In a statement, Ms Vagi described the allegations as baseless and misleading, saying they unfairly discredit the work of the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission [PNGEC]. She stressed that the outcome of the Dei By-Election has not been influenced by any PNGEC officials.
Ms Vagi said the social media posts were made by unidentified individuals and have damaged the integrity of the Electoral Commission.
She also explained that the decision to appoint a new Returning Officer came with clear instructions not to count ballot boxes from Rolna and Rangi wards. This followed the circulation of a video on social media showing people allegedly filling out ballot papers.
Meanwhile, the Acting Electoral Commissioner has urged members of the public to report any election-related offences to the police. She also warned election officials to remain neutral and not compromise their duties by engaging with candidates or their supporters.
