No ongoing tribal fight in Hela’s Tebi LLG
Hela Governor Philip Undialu has dismissed claims circulating on social media that a tribal fight is currently taking place in the Tebi Local Level Government [LLG] of Tari Pori District.
He described the reports as completely misleading and a clear case of misinformation, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that may cause unnecessary panic and tension in the LLG.
“However, there has been a guerrilla-style conflict involving a small group of youths armed with illegal weapons targeting members of rival tribes.
"This situation prompted precautionary measures to ensure the safety of innocent women and children.
“The movement of people seen in recent videos and pictures was a deliberate and coordinated evacuation effort organized by local leaders in consultation with the Hela Provincial Government.
"This measure was necessary to protect vulnerable community members from potential harm.
"Those evacuated have now been relocated to safe locations and are receiving support,” Governor Undialu said.
He said local leaders and police have successfully apprehended the individual who initiated the problem, and he is currently in custody.
Authorities are now calling for the surrender of the ringleader from the opposing faction.
He elaborated that volunteers’ have buried some of the deceased, while others remain at the morgue and will be laid to rest later this week.
The Governor stated that Tebi LLG President David Wau is leading humanitarian assistance and peace mediation efforts.
Additional police personnel from outside Hela Province have been deployed to prevent further escalation and a gun surrender program will be implemented later this month.
The people have been urged to refrain from spreading misinformation and support constructive peace efforts during this sensitive time.
