Kumul Gebbie signs new two-year deal with Dons
2025 Doncaster Player of the Year and PNG Kumuls back Edene Gebbie has committed his future to the club after signing a new two-year contract with the Dons ahead of the upcoming season.
The Papua New Guinea international enjoyed an outstanding campaign last year, scoring 25 tries in 22 appearances, and was a key figure in the Dons’ attacking success. Gebbie will now be aiming to build on that form and help push the club into the play-offs this season.
Reflecting on his return, Gebbie said his first year with the club in the second-tier United Kingdom competition proved to be a turning point.
“Last year I came in and I was struggling at first in the first few games but things changed and I did well, so they have asked me to come back,” he said. “It was a good season for me and I am happy to be here.”
The 30-year-old winger believes the squad has been strengthened during the off-season and is confident of a strong campaign ahead.
“I have been happy to see some more good players coming in and I think we can do well this season. I think we will make the finals this year,” he said.
Gebbie has recently rejoined the Dons squad after spending the off-season and festive period in PNG, where he has represented his country at international level. Prior to joining the Dons, he spent a season with Whitehaven, marking his first experience in English rugby league after switching from Australia.
Head coach Richard Horne welcomed the re-signing, stating that it will be a major boost for the club.
“We’re delighted to have Gebbie back with us for the new season,” Horne said. “He made a massive impact last season, particularly with his try-scoring, and we think he can produce even more this year with the players we’ve added to the group.
“He’s an exciting player and it’s a great bit of business for us to keep him with us in the longer term.”
