The newly established Nadzab Tomodachi International airport in Lae, Morobe province will soon see the expansion of modern infrastructure.

Currently, the airport is only taking domestic flights, with not much infrastructure.

Support services provided to the airport have also been stopped.

A 1,000-hectare plot of land near the airport, which the Minister for International Trade and Investment, Richard Maru, identified as a special economic zone, is still underutilized.

Morobe governor Reinbo Paita raised to Minister responsible in parliament yesterday, of his plans in making the airport city a reality for the people.

Minister Maru in response clarified that, according to PNG's history, no governments have ever accomplished building a city, highlighting it as costly exercise.

A consultative workshop, with partners, including the Morobe government administration will be held in January 2026, to discuss global experiences on building modern cities.
