PNG Forest Authority [PNGFA] Managing Director John Mosoro is calling on all key players in the forest sector to attend a national forest forum in mid-December at APEC Haus.

Mr Mosoro made the call after Forest Minister Salio Waipo issued a public notice this week inviting stakeholders to the event.

He said the forum is important because PNGFA will update stakeholders on the government’s policy to stop issuing round log export permits and licences. This ban will take effect on 24 December 2025.

“It will also give the opportunity to the key stakeholders which include Forest Industry Participants (FIP), project resource owners, relevant government agencies, civil society and business communities of their views of the ban of round log exports,” Mr Mosoro said.

He added that the government will also announce a “Transition Plan” to move fully into downstream processing.

“In light of recent announcements by Prime Minister James Marape, PNGFA and the government must implement the Prime Minister’s directive,” he said.

Mr Mosoro also confirmed that PNGFA is setting up a log export transition committee. The committee will review current processes and make recommendations to the National Forest Board on actions needed in the medium term to support the policy.

He said it is important that all key stakeholders attend and fully participate in the discussions to ensure the policy is implemented effectively.
