Ipatas urges provincial leaders not to interfere in UOG evacuations
Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas has cautioned provincial governments against organizing their own evacuations of students from the University of Goroka (UOG), following violent clashes between students and the local community over the weekend.
Sir Peter said while concerns for student safety are understandable, UOG remains a national institution with its own governance structure to manage such crises.
"I want to stress it to governors in this country, it is not our responsibility. Until and when the University of Goroka, through its Senate, asks for help, then, we are obliged to help," he said.
He said Eastern Highlands Provincial Government, as the host province, along with university authorities, should take the lead in resolving the situation.
Sir Peter also welcomed the presence of the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Kinoka Feo, saying the Minister is the appropriate authority to make decisions regarding the university’s operations.
“I’m encouraged that the Minister is on the ground, he’s the right person to make that call,” he said.
The Enga Governor further urged provincial leaders not to react to social media reports or attempt to remove students without authorization from the university’s governing body.
Meanwhile, the University of Goroka remains closed indefinitely as repatriation efforts continue for students from various provinces.
