Sumkar MP condemns Karkar killings, announces law and order response
Sumkar MP, Alex Orme, has announced, 'Operation Cleanup', in direct response to the three beheading cases on the island late last week.
He has also strongly condemned the killings that have caused fear and tension amongst the local communities.
Mr Orme confirmed that two men from Gial Village were killed at Kinim Station, allegedly by members of the Urugen group, following earlier clashes that left two others dead and several injured.
“These senseless killings must stop. Violence is never the answer. I extend my deepest condolences to the affected families,” Orme said.
The Sumkar District Development Authority is working closely with the Provincial Police Commander for Madang, Superintendent Robert Baim, to deploy Task Force Zulu from Madang to Karkar Island to restore order and arrest those involved.
Mr Orme personally coordinated and funded the immediate movement of police personnel last Friday to Kubugam, covering fuel and logistics so officers could be sent immediately to Karkar Island. This rapid response prevented the situation from worsening and demonstrated the MP’s commitment to public safety, and ensured law enforcement could act without delay.
“No one is above the law. Those responsible will face justice,” he emphasized.
MP Orme also announced Operation Cleanup to begin this month through Christmas, targeting homebrew and drug operations that are fueling lawlessness across Karkar Island.
“Homebrew and drugs are destroying lives and communities. We will work with police to eliminate them,” he said.
He has also urged all leaders and citizens to support police efforts and maintain peace.
“Law and order is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we must make our communities safe and peaceful," said Mr Orme.
