Counting gains momentum in Morobe’s LLG elections
The race for local leadership in Morobe is picking up pace, with counting underway in several Local Level Governments [LLGs] and a wave of new councillors set to take office soon.
Of the province’s 37 LLGs, Buang Rural LLG in Bulolo District, and Mape and Burum Rural LLGs in Finschhafen District have completed counting for ward councillor elections. All winners in Buang and Burum have been announced, while Mape LLG’s results are still pending.
Meanwhile, Selepet LLG in Kabwum District and Labuta Rural LLG in Nawaeb District are holding polling and counting simultaneously, signaling smooth coordination on the ground.
Wards in 11 other LLGs are currently in their counting phase, while 17 LLGs are still conducting polling. Four LLGs have completed polling and are awaiting confirmed counting dates later this week.
Despite some hiccups, such as voters not finding their names on the electoral roll, Morobe Provincial Elections Manager Simon Soheke said the situation was well managed.
“Our officers collected the names of those who were affected and were able to calm the situation, allowing polling to continue smoothly,” Soheke told NBC News.
All ward councillors are expected to be elected ahead of the return of writs on November 21. Following that, the Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs will hold inaugural meetings within 15 days, during which councillors will select their LLG Presidents.
“Once the LLG Presidents are elected, their swearing-in ceremonies will follow immediately,” Soheke added. “The 10 Morobe Members of Parliament will then join the newly elected presidents in Tutumang to vote for the Deputy Governor.”
With elections advancing steadily across the province, Morobe’s local governance landscape is poised for a significant reshuffle, promising new leadership at both ward and LLG levels.
