The journey in the Kumuls jersey starts this weekend: Demetriou backs young Kumuls for Pacific Championships

Papua New Guinea Kumuls head coach Jason Demetriou says it is the right time to expose young talents to elite-level rugby league as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
Demetriou believes rising stars Gairo Voro, Finley Glare and Cooper Bai will play key roles in the Pacific Championships, forming part of the team’s long-term development plan.
“Finley was in our squad last year but didn’t play in the Pacific Championships. I think he’s an elite-level No.9,” Demetriou said.
“I wanted to get him around Edwin Ipape as much as possible, and seeing them together on the field is definitely worthwhile. I think he’ll show his class this weekend.”
Demetriou said Voro and Morea Morea have also earned their call-ups following a strong Hostplus Cup season.
“Morea had an outstanding finish to the season with the Capras, and Voro was Rookie of the Year for the Hunters. It’s amazing how far he’s come and where he can get to over the next few years, but that journey in the Kumuls jersey starts this weekend.”
He said Cooper Bai, son of PNG legend Marcus Bai, has also impressed in training and is ready to step up.
“Cooper feels like a seasoned pro already. He’s had a much better week with more focus on his footy, and I’m looking forward to him playing good footy this weekend.”
The Kumuls squad features five Super League and four NRL-based players, blending experience with youth for their opening match against the Cook Islands Aitu at 3pm this Saturday at the Santos National Football Stadium.
Despite missing Kosso Bandi, Elijah Roltinga and Benji Kot from last year’s squad, due to injuries, Demetriou remains confident.
“It’s the most experienced side we’ve named. We’ve replaced those guys with quality players, and having Cooper, Edwin (Ipape), AJ (Alex Johnston) and Zech Laybutt back gives us real experience across the park.”
Demetriou admitted that selection was difficult, with several notable omissions.
“It was tough leaving out Judah Rimbu, Sanny Wabo and Ila Alu. Three players I rate highly who have big futures as Kumuls. Next year’s World Cup squad will be bigger, and they’ll be right in contention.”
He also confirmed Roderick Tai and Jeremiah Simbiken were ruled out through injury.
