Temporary liquor ban to be imposed in Western Highlands

The Western Highlands Provincial Government [WHPG] has announced a temporary liquor ban to be enforced during the Mt Hagen Cultural Show and continuing through the 50th Independence Golden Jubilee celebrations, up until the return of writs for the Local Level Government [LLG] elections.

The ban is part of an effort to maintain public order, ensuring community safety, and support peaceful environment during a period of major cultural and political activity in the province.

Western Highlands Governor Wai Rapa the decision was made in close consultation with police, community leaders and the Provincial liquor licensing board.

"The Provincial Administrator must sign the instrument quickly to enforce the temporary ban in the province.

"This is a time of National pride and local celebrations. We want our people and visitors to enjoy these events peacefully and responsibly.

"The liquor ban is a preventive measure to avoid alcohol-related incidences and disturbances," Governor Rapa said.

The Western Highlands Governor reiterated that the safety of the people and visitors alike are adamant as well as the integrity of the LLG election process are the top priorities and call on all residents and business owners to respect this decision and cooperate with enforcement agencies.

Meantime, police have been directed to continue patrols and carry out spot checks to ensure full compliance throughout the Cultural Show, 50th Independence Golden Jubilee celebrations and the election period.
