Papua New Guinea was reminded today of its significance in the Pacific region and especially to New Zealand.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christoper Luxon was humbled to address the house in a special address this morning, reminding PNG of its strategic position in the region and its critical role in trade routes for Asia and the Indo Pacific nations.

He described PNG both as a buffer and a bridge.

Adding that, PNG was a rich, resilient and democratic country charting its own course, celebrating diversity and pursuing development in a way unique to itself.

He says the relationship between the two countries goes beyond 50 years, showing links to the past through shared stories, trade and traditions.

He reinforced his New Zealand Government's commitment to deepening existing ties with PNG through various programs in labor mobility, sports, cultural and regional security issues and working together for a prosperous and safe region for all.
